What is anaerobic digestion, and what does it do? Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that occurs when bacteria are responsible for the digestion of biomass in an environment that has no oxygen. This will produce a gas that consists of mainly carbon dioxide and methane and is called biogas.
Anaerobic digestion is frequently used to treat sewage wastes and to manage animal wastes. This process is not limited to these waste types, however, and anaerobic digestion can be used with almost any type of organic material, including food waste, waste paper, animal waste, grass clipping, leaves, and much more.
Anaerobic digestion takes place in three main steps. First, the plant or organic matter decomposes and breaks down. The goal is to get the material to form molecules of a specific size, such as sugar molecules. Algaculture is the process of algae farming. Algae can be cultivated to be used as a source of biodiesel fuel, and these plant forms can have many benefits.
There are three things needed for algae to grow; these are water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight. Algae use sunlight in a process called photosynthesis, which is when energy from the sun is converted into chemical energy. The chemical energy that is created is then used to start and sustain chemical reactions like the formation of sugars or converting nitrogen into necessary amino acids. Algal oil is produced by algae and can be used to produce biodiesel. Biodiesel production from algal oil on a large-scale basis could have the potential to produce the amount of biodiesel needed to completely replace gasoline, but unfortunately, technology is not this advanced yet, and algae-farming today is minimal. Biomass fuels are exactly that. Biomass is any organic matter that comes from plants and animals. These are sources of stored energy from the sun by photosynthesis. Plants use the sun's energy during photosynthesis and humans and animals gain this energy when they eat plants.
Biomass fuel can help to improve the future in many ways with their many benefits. Biomass fuels are much friendlier to the environment than fossil fuels for many reasons. Biomass fuels do not contain sulfur in their emissions like fossil fuels, and sulfur is the component responsible for harmful acid rain. When burned, biomass fuels will release some carbon dioxide, but this is offset by the fact that biofuels are produced plant matter, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while growing. Biomass energy is an alternative renewable energy source and is produced using waste materials. This has many benefits for the environment. Biofuels that are produced from waste materials burn much cleaner than fossil fuels so there is a lot less pollution and harmful carbon emissions released into the air. Biofuels also do not depend on traditional fossil fuels, like oil and coal, so they do not deplete the resources of the earth and will never run out. Since they use waste materials, there is less left to sit in a landfill and to harm the environment. Biofuels can also help end dependence on high priced oil and other fossil fuels. Approximately 45 percent of renewable alternative energy used in the United States comes from biomass energy and biofuels.
Biomass energy is created from organic waste materials like leftover wood, husks and shells from corn and rice, sugar cane that has already been pressed, and others. Some biomass energy is created using special crops that grow rapidly, have no food value, and can be used for energy production exclusively. These include switchgrass and willow. Using algae as a biomass source may seem farfetched or space- age to some, but today, we're a lot closer to using this energy source than many think. Biomass energy is becoming more common, especially with the price of oil and other fossil fuels increasing. Biomass fuels and other alternative renewable energy sources help prevent pollution and global warming. Pollution and global warming have become big concerns. On many days in some large cities in the United States, it is not 100 percent safe to breathe the outside air because of all the pollution.
Some of the biggest arguments against biomass and biofuels come from third-world governments and impoverished countries. They argue that producing these energy sources will reduce the amount of crops grown for food and will result in a significant food price increase, but algae may be one of the available solutions that can satisfy critics and replace fossil fuels that damage and put a strain on the earth.
