While the automotive industry is avidly researching the possibility of a sustainable hydrogen fuel solution, the costs that are involved have created hurtles that have seemed insurmountable.

Leave it to Cambridge University to focus and produce a sustainable hydrogen alternative. Their answer in this dilemma was to substitute a cobalt catalyst as a replacement for the more expensive source use of platinum. The results have led to the production of what is known as the first ‘green’ solution in the production of sustainable hydrogen.

There are additional hurtles to address, as the catalyst itself is does have poor stability, and is requiring additional research into the concept of industrial water splitting as a direction to assist in making the sustainable hydrogen more ‘industry ready’. Overall, the outlook is becoming more hopeful that there can be a world using sustainable hydrogen.
