The Nissan "Second Life" program is a program started for lithium ion car batteries which are used. These batteries are used in alternative fuel vehicles, and then again as nissan second life batteries to provide solutions for energy storage around the world. The Nissan second life program is part of the focus the company has placed on the model of reuse, resell, re-fabricate, and recycle. As electric cars become more common, there will be an increase in the number of these used batteries, and it is important to consumers and the environment that there is a use for them. When a battery is no longer usable in an electric car, it still has quite a bit of power in it. In addition the batteries can be recharged. The Nissan "Second Life" program is an important step in the right direction for a future which is fossil fuel free. Nissan "Second Life" batteries can be recycled and reused to store energy from many sources. The estimates are that by the end of the year 2010 there will be more than fifty thousand electric cars just in the country of Japan alone. The Nissan "Second Life" program will use the batteries from these alternative fuel vehicles and put them to good use even after their use in electric vehicles are finished. The batteries can be used to store energy that is collected using solar panels or other renewable energy sources. Previously used lithium ion batteries can be useful for other applications, instead of being disposed of when they are no longer useful for electric vehicles.
