Investing in alternative energy might be a very smart choice nowadays. With President Elect Barack Obama taking office, and his very vocal commitment to eliminating the dependence on fossil fuels and switching to domestically produced sources of alternative energy, this investment is a great opportunity. Alternative sources of energy are the key to the energy future, but there are not many alternative energy investment options available on Wall Street, mainly because many alternative energy companies do not meet the extensive history requirements of most exchanges. This does not make an alternative energy investment a bad decision though, because many of these alternative energy companies are very solid and have a lot to offer. This will be especially true when alternative energy really takes off and is commonly used.
Renewable Energy Technologies
There are a number of renewable energy technologies that can be used to end the dependence on fossil fuels and stop the contributions to global warming and pollution. Some of these new technologies are more effective and better to use than others.

1. Energy From Waste technology allows municipal solid waste to be used as a clean and renewable source of energy. This technology can resolve two separate issues with one process - municipal solid waste management and energy generation at the same time. Municipal solid waste is disposed of, and does not contribute to pollution or damage to the earth like traditional land filling methods. The garbage is used as a source of energy, supplying the energy needs of the population. This can be done by a number of methods, including gasification, pyrolysis, special land filling methods, and other new advanced techniques like a so-called Rivera process from Sustainable Power Corp, for example.

2. Renewable Solar Power systems use photovoltaic technology, panels, and cells to convert sunlight into electricity and heat.

3. Wind Energy Systems utilize wind turbines to capture the power of the wind. This energy is then converted into electricity.

4. Geothermal Energy is provided by the heat inside the earth. This technology can be very effective if located in places where geothermal activity is high.

5. Hydro Energy is derived from the rivers or the ocean tides.

6. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is another form of ocean power that uses the temperature of the water to create electricity.

7. Finally, last but not the least, Biomass Energy uses biomass algae which is converted into different forms of energy. This can be the production of various biofuels, part of waste to energy programs, and any other form of energy generation where biomass is used to create electricity, heat, or fuel.
Where To Find The Most Alternative Energy Investment Options
Despite alternative energy is now becoming a widespread idea, many alternative energy companies are still penny stock companies, even though they offer huge potential for an investor. This can be for a number of reasons, but the most common one is that alternative energy companies have not been in operation for many years, and most alternative energy companies are five years old or less. Many investors will not trade in penny stocks because of a fear that these stocks are risky or low quality, but this is not usually true. Any company starts out small, and must prove their value and worth. This means almost every company starts out as a penny stock. As alternative sources of energy are more widely used, alternative energy penny stocks in quality companies that are using solid technologies are going to soar. An investment in alternative energy before that happens means a much better potential for high returns, and a great investment opportunity.
Benefits of Alternative Energy Investments:
- Investing before the technology takes off, so you are situated to get in on the ground floor and see a bigger increase in your investment value.
- Lower initial investment cost
- Potential for higher returns, because fossil fuel reserves will not last long
- Investment in the clean energy technology of the future
- Knowledge that this investment will help stop pollution and environmental damage
Just because most alternative energy companies are in penny stocks does not mean that you can not invest wisely. Alternative energy penny stocks can be a fantastic investment opportunity as long as you have done the research and understand the technology behind the investment.

so im 18 and have been seeing all of the new technologies in alternative energy technologies and sources and would like to invest but i would like to know how to find companies that are specializing in alternative energies. and i know it can be a risky investment but a lot of companies are converting so i have confidence and then with the different varieties of alternate energy but my money is on solar and wind, but i could also invest in companies that are converting to more energy efficiant cars/buildings but i just dont know a good place to go to research companies or even find companies that are doing this. so if i could get a few sources that would be sweet.
May 11th, 2009 at 8:51 pmI BELIEVE THAT INVESTING IN BIOFUELS AT THIS TIME IS AKIN TO INVESTING IN GOOGLE OR APPLE OR MICROSOFT, NOW IS THE TIME IF YOU ARE YOUNG ENOUGH AND HAVE A FEW BUCKS TO INVEST, NOW IS THE TIME.
April 29th, 2009 at 1:16 pmLike this Article elaborates on, the green revolution will not happen until we put real investment into alternative energy & efficiency standards.
Discount Capital Corp., has recently opened a new division devoted entirely to financing any types of alternative energy business. They have experience working with all credits and financial standings and can get any qualified business the working capital they need to build, scale, and produce the results they need to jump into the market place.

March 22nd, 2009 at 7:49 pmAfter doing research on renewable energy micro-generation – I would argue investing in renewable energy technology for your own property or business is also a great idea. Energy prices are rising, therefore investing in wind/solar power for your business is an appreciating asset. You benefit from the decreased electricity/energy bills and the ROI will improve over time as these bills are going up. Thus – renewables are a tangible appreciating asset. It requires simple math skills to calculate that if you invest in a source of energy that is free, then the asset will pay for itself many times in the lifetime of the equipment. Choosing which renewable source depends upon location i.e. wind turbines are efficient with a higher wind speed. The output of power per unit of investment is usually higher for a ideally-sited turbine. Solar PV will be effective for sunny areas with low wind speed.
February 25th, 2009 at 10:55 amSee, I’m just not sure the market is truly stable enough at this point in time to invest in anything, alternative energy or otherwise. If I was going to invest, though, I would have to invest in wind power or solar energy.
February 23rd, 2009 at 12:29 pmPersonally, I’ve done a lot of research on alternative energies and I think that if you are going to invest your money in something, you should do your research before investing.
February 10th, 2009 at 11:28 amWhen it comes right down to it, we need to come up with an alternative energy and we need to be utilizing the alternative energies already in practice, otherwise we are going to keep destroying our beautiful environment! Now is the time to invest.
February 10th, 2009 at 11:26 amI am wondering which one is the wisest investment if someone was willing and wanting to invest in these uncertain times.
February 8th, 2009 at 9:12 amIf you were going to invest at this time I would think the best one would be the one that is doing not only the most for our enviroment but also the one that is being used the most by the people and large companies.
February 7th, 2009 at 8:37 amAlthough alternative energy might be a great place to invest how do you know what type is the best to invest into?
February 6th, 2009 at 8:54 pmI think we are in the dead end with our system and its not smart to give out what you have to the virtual structure of the past like a stock market. alternative energy has its future – stock markets do NOT
February 6th, 2009 at 12:55 pmIt’s not the time to invest, it’s time to wait and learn on others’ mistakes
February 6th, 2009 at 12:47 pmI am sure that alternative energy investment will be profitable. The issue is which source of energy will get a priority for its development
February 6th, 2009 at 12:46 pmAlthough investing in the stock market is really shakey at this time if I was going to consider investing in it I would look to alternative energy. It is the thing of the present and the future.
February 6th, 2009 at 8:35 amThis is a interesting concept, but is it a good idea right now to invest in anything? With the stock market so iffy, it might be better to watch and see how alternative energy stock takes off.
