<p>Biomass energy production is considered as one of the greatest prospects for the green low carbon future. Many researchers are currently focused on the generation of energy using biomass, and on the economic challenges involved. The origin of the biomass, the logistics, as well as storage and handling make up an entire energy supply chain with a large number of variables.</p>
<p>The biomass conversation supply chain is not yet developed. Many of the transportation, storage and handling systems that are required still need to be set up. For biomass conversation to be cost efficient, existing infrastructure and technology needs to be leveraged in the meantime.<br />

<p>Power plants need to be located near sources of biomass. The huge amount of product needed to run a large scale power plants means that this would significantly effect the overall cost of the energy generation.</p>
<p>An important issue that biomass power plants face is that a continuous supply of fuel is not guaranteed. For this reason the facility needs to be able to process a variety of biomass fuel types. Enormous quantities of biomass are required, and transportation, storage and handling costs are high. For instance, it costs nearly 3 times the amount to transport wet wood chips for biomass fuel than coal, and 5 times the amount if the chips are dry. Densifying biomass for transportation is an option. This in itself is an additional expense, but worth considering if the biomass needs to be transported a long distance. Densification reduces moisture and significantly increases the density of the material.</p>
<p>In the Pacific Northwest the estimated cost to generate electricity from biomass conversion (biomass feedstock energy) is around 6 cents per KWh. This is quite high when you consider that a gas-fired power plant produces energy for less than 3 cents per KWh. However, many factors such as those described above can heavily influence the cost of biomass energy production. In addition, new <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/biomass-gasification-technologies-for-different-feedstock-types/">gasification technologies</a> are likely to reduce the cost of biomass power generation in the future. Biomass feedstock energy can become more cost effective by developing particularly cheap to produce sources of biomass such as <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/biomass-fuel-and-biodiesel-production-in-different-countries/">rapeseed oil</a> The design of the facilities and the location of the station is of great importance too. All this can bring the cost of biomass energy production down to a level which is competitive with current methods of energy production.</p>
<p>When talking about “costs,” the environmental cost is at least as important as the economic cost. The world is taking the first tangible steps to moving away from a carbon based economy, and the development of biomass energy production is one important step in this direction. Coal power stations emit vast amounts of <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/7-most-dangerous-types-of-environmental-pollution/">carbon and pollutants</a> Gas power stations also pump large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/pros-and-cons-of-nuclear-power/"> Nuclear power</a> stations produce hazardous radioactive components. Biomass power plants are much cleaner and emit much less carbon. In time they may become the predominant method of energy production.</p>

<p>The benefits of algae farming or algaculture, as it is now called, are endless. The main one is that algae can be used as biodiesel fuel source and help decrease or even eliminate our dependence on foreign oil and harmful fossil fuels. Algae in general grows much faster than land crops, so is more efficient for making biodiesel. An acre of algae has the potential to produce 5,000-20,000 gallons of oil, which can, in turn, be converted to biodiesel. It is possible to process raw algae in order to make biocrude, which is petroleum’s renewable equivalent. It is also possible to refine it in order to make jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, and chemical feedstocks for drugs and plastics. Oil refineries can also be used to process it, so anything that is made from crude oil can be made from it as well.<br />

<p>Another one of the important benefits of algaculture is that algae releases oxygen and uses carbon dioxide, like other plant life. So, this means that algaculture that is large-scale would not only create environmentally friendly biofuels, but also that while the algae grows, it would release fresh oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, thus cleaning the air. Generally about 77 percent of the whole mass of algae may be used in animal feeds, with 13 percent used for oil converted into biodiesel, and the 10 percent that remains used in food supplements as fatty acids.</p>
<p>The theoretical benefits of algae farming are clear. It can grow in open ponds or in sealed clear tubes. It has the potential to produce a lot more oil than soybeans (per acre), which is also a source of oil for <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/biodiesel-production-can-help-third-world-economies/">biodiesel</a>. It is also possible for algae to clean up waste by processing carbon dioxide from plants and nitrogen from wastewater. Another one of the great benefits of algaculture is that algae can be grown on marginal lands, which is unsuitable for regular crops, salt aquifers can be used as its sources of water, which cannot be used for agriculture or drinking.</p>
<p>Three things are necessary to grow algae: sunlight, <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/carbon-emissions-increase-human-mortality-rate/">carbon dioxide</a>, and water. Algae, like other plant life, goes through a process called photosynthesis, converting the sun’s energy into chemical energy. This resulting energy is used for chemical reactions like sugar formation or converting nitrogen into amino acids. Of course, algal oil is used to produce biodiesel, which, if done on a large-scale basis, has the potential to completely replace gasoline. However, the technology is not nearly advanced enough yet, and algaculture is still at a minimal level. It is developing quickly though, and will be doing so in the upcoming years, since there is a need like never before for <a href="http://www.bionomicfuel.com/the-8-leading-sources-of-renewable-energy-that-will-supply-half-the-worlds-power/"> renewable energy sources.</a></p>

<p>According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, the first of the biomass boilers in Indiana was placed in the Pendleton Correctional Facility. When all four of these alternative energy systems are in place, it is estimated that the state will save more than $36 million over a 10-year time period. The state has agreed to buy used wood scraps and pieces from businesses in the local communities where the biomass boilers are used, and this is what will fuel the boilers in the prisons. There are no fossil fuels used and the costs of heating the prison facilities are lowered at the same time. </p>
<p>Biomass boilers in Indiana are starting in four prisons, but if the cost savings that are estimated actually occur, many businesses in the state may take this green option as well. The four prisons in Indiana involved in the initial stages of this energy conservation and cost control project are Pendleton Correctional Facility, Indiana State Prison, Westville Correctional Facility and Plainfield Correctional Facility. Using biofuels can make a big difference to the environment and the state of Indiana is one of the first to be willing to prove that these biomass boilers can help save money.</p>

<p>Seismic exploration is a geophysics method that uses seismology principles to determine the earth&#039;s properties, and more specifically, the subsurface of the earth.  This methodology uses seismic waves reflected from the earth&#039;s subsurface to determine specifics like carbon emissions and has become a widely used technique in the study of hydrocarbons.<br />

<p>Seismic exploration is also a means of searching for deposits of natural gas, crude oil and minerals that prove to be economically and commercially beneficial.  Artificial seismic exploration is becoming increasingly popular, but in areas that are environmentally sensitive, like some arctic regions, this method of study is regulated strictly by government officials.  Although trials measuring carbon emissions are needed, state and federal governments must regulate seismic exploration due to the sensitivity of the area&#039;s environment.  With too much investigation and disturbance in determining biomass energy as well as other experiments, the environment can be harmed. </p>
<p>Some of the first known studies in seismology and biomass energy were performed by John C. Karcher and his team in the summer of 1921.  The survey mapped out a limestone bed in an area of Oklahoma known as Belle Isle.  Since that time, more sophisticated means of exploration have developed and geophysicists are still improving their means of study and accuracy rates.  As the search for hydrocarbons continues, we will most likely see a continuation in this type of study due to its proven success rates over the course of nearly 100 years.  Today, seismic exploration has become the most widely used geophysical technique in the discovery of carbon emissions.</p>
